More than one hundred years ago, the American Cancer Society began the fight of a lifetime – the fight against cancer.
Since 1913, the American Cancer Society has led the battle to prevent cancer by supporting research, advocating for more effective public health policies, promoting healthy living through education and screening programs, and by providing support and comfort to cancer patients, survivors and their families. As the world’s largest voluntary health organization, the Society is widely regarded as the most trusted source of cancer information and support. Today, with more than 3.5 million volunteers, a local service presence in 5,000 communities, a high-volume call center and comprehensive website, the Society’s reach is both local and global.
After more than 100 years of saving lives and creating more birthdays, we’re leading the way in working tirelessly to transform cancer from deadly to treatable and from treatable to preventable.
Today, 2 out of 3 people diagnosed with cancer are surviving (for at least five years). In fact, more than 400 people a day in the US are celebrating birthdays that would have otherwise been lost to the disease. We’ve contributed to a 20 percent decline in cancer death rates in the U.S. since the early 1990s. That means we’ve helped save nearly 1.2 million lives during that time.
We’ve played a role in nearly every cancer research breakthrough in recent history. Each year, we help cancer patients everywhere get the help they need when they need it. For example, last year alone we assisted more than a million people who called us for help, providing free services like a place to stay while traveling for treatment, rides to treatment, emotional support, and much more. Our work has helped lead to a 50 percent drop in smoking since the 1960s, which has contributed to a drop in overall lung cancer death rates.
As the official sponsor of birthdays, we know how important each and every birthday is. That’s why we’re embarking on our most ambitious undertaking yet. We’re determined to make this cancer’s last century and finish the fight – not just in America but for people everywhere. We want to change the statistics from 2 out of 3 people surviving cancer today in the US to 3 out of 3 surviving. We’ve never been more ready to put the American Cancer Society out of business.
We’ll continue to ensure that: lifesaving cancer research gets funded; people facing cancer have the help they need, like a free place to stay during treatment and a ride to get there; and we’ll amplify our efforts to keep fighting for everyone to have access to quality health care, lifesaving screenings, clean air, and more.
The Society has 35 locations proving local support services and programs in New York and New Jersey working to finish the fight.
